In Florida, assisted living facilities (ALF) provide housing and personal care to vulnerable adults and seniors who count on staff in an emergency. To keep residents safe, a staff member trained in first aid and CPR must be present whenever residents are on site.

The first-aid requirement

Under Rule 59A-36.010, a staff member who has completed first-aid and CPR courses and holds a currently valid card must be in the ALF at all times when residents are present. That person must be able to intervene until emergency services arrive.

A recognized, up-to-date first-aid and CPR certificate is the way to meet this obligation; it is in addition to the staff's occupational training and must be renewed periodically.
